Full Title A Tribue to: "We Hear Stories When It Rains"

This image has become one of my all time favorites here on DA, for obvious reasons. The original photo, found here [link] , was taken by ` marcyintellect It is superb in almost every way.

I don't know what made me do this, but whatever the case it has been done. I have NEVER, EVER, done anything like this before. I only doodle during lectures, and I have never attempted to draw from photo reference, ever. So, this would be filed under "First Attempts." I don't think this capture of the drawing does it justice, as with most reproductions, however, what's there is there. All in all, this took a few hours of work. Once things started coming together, I started losing my breath as the image found its way onto the paper.

This one is for you Marcy, and for the twins.

All comments greatly appreciated, and read carefully. I'd like to hear what I could do to improve further attempts like this, since I am now into it. After that, do with it what you like. :)

*First attempt... fantastic. First thing that impacts you is the expression. With the face on the left, that eye just refuses to leave view along with the shape and the shading lifting to the eyebrow. The face on the right also draws you to the eye of course but the main focus is on the expression as a whole, the eye peering to the corner and the mouth/chin area. This is a brilliant piece for emotion/expression and you have captured the esscence excellently. I'd say certainly keep at it & practice further with shading.

Thanks for the critique! Is there anything I should focus in on that need improvement? I know I need a lot more lip and nose work, they still confuse me...
:iconnin44:
:) Keep going at lips... with the noses, that photo is not one for noses in the sense you can't see the underneath section so if you decide to have a go at other portraits (I certainly think you should,) see how you find them. With the lips its also a matter of what look you are trying to achieve. For example, if you want that photo finish look, experiment with thinning the lines a little that are on the lip itself, have a good look back and forth to the photograph. I look forward to seeing how you get on.

Wow, just wanted to say i thought this was a photo from the thumbnail view. and even still in the full view. the only thing that gave it away was your description. You got me good!

wow...ugly photo, very dirty. :) At least I know I'm on the right track if you didn't see it at first...

Okay, sounds good to me. I'm going to go pick up some nicer pencils and a sketch pad, so I don't have to use cruddy printer paper...
